About
SLIME TIME
The First Official Art Garage Activity: Wednesday June 6th 2019.
Of course there had been a lot of build up, lots of unofficial activities. What started it off? It was the lawn mower. I was out with a manual lawn motor, and the kids were curious. They wanted to use it and took turns pushing it, Boi Boi took it over to his yard and mowed his front lawn, then Marco did the same. Finally, they brought it back. That day my lawn never did get fully mowed. There were long patches here and there, and that made me smile.
The next time they came over I had some of my school supplies around, ready to be played with. I had just gotten over a very sad ending to the “Boys Town” project that was sponsored by the school district designed to help a small handful of boys who had been expelled from the special programs. I loved those boys, but in the end I wasn’t able to give them enough support. It ended too abruptly, and my heart was broken. These two enthusiastic, somewhat hyper boys brought a smile to my broken heart, and helped me mend.
I had recorders, paints, and I even brought out a rocket that used vinegar and baking soda, and they boys shot it off. The fun ended when it landed on the roof, and we couldn’t find it. I was actually grateful to get a break, and thought what am I going to do with these kids?
The next day they showed up at 8AM. I brought out tempra paints and let the kids paint on the outside of my garage. The paint was chipping and the windows had been boarded up. The garage looked neglected. The tempra paint brought life back to the garage and hence the Art Garage was born.
So back to the first official activity: Wednesday June 6th, 2PM.
The day came, and I wasn’t sure if they were coming or not. But it didn’t matter, if they came we would make slime, if not, then I would just rest. 2PM rolled around, no kiddos. No problem. I was just going to give up when around 4PM, they rolled around and we got started making slime. I allowed Zaire to make the first batch since she had made some with me before. Then they took turns. The boys played in the pool until the girls were done, and then they even joined in. Overall it was a great success. I wonder what will come next.
